Frequently asked questions
Connector matching, lead times, materials, and the honest answer on whether a cable changes how your headphones sound. If yours isn’t here, just ask โ we answer every message ourselves.
Choosing the right cable
How do I know which connector fits my headphone or IEM?
The safest answer: tell us your exact make and model and we’ll confirm it โ before you order, or in the order notes at checkout.
This isn’t us being cautious for the sake of it. Connectors that look identical are frequently wired to different pinouts by different manufacturers. A dual 3.5 mm cable built for one brand can physically plug into another brand’s headphone and still not work, because the internal wiring standard differs. Matching the socket shape is not enough.
Common IEM connectors include 0.78 mm 2-pin, MMCX, QDC-style 2-pin, A2DC, IPX and Pentaconn Ear โ several of which have brand-specific variants.
Will a cable actually change how my headphones sound?
Honestly: sometimes, subtly, and it depends on you and your system.
What a cable reliably changes is fit, length, connector compatibility, durability and contact reliability. Different conductor materials and structures can also shift tonal character, and many listeners do report hearing a difference โ but that depends on your headphones, your source and your own ears.
What a cable cannot do is turn an entry-level headphone into a flagship, or add detail your equipment never produced in the first place. We would rather you buy from us twice than oversell you once.
What’s the difference between silver, copper and hybrid?
As a rough guide to the tendencies people report:
- Single-crystal copper โ warmer character, fuller low-mids. A safe default.
- Single-crystal silver โ brighter, with more apparent treble extension.
- Silverโcopper hybrid โ a middle path between the two.
- Graphene hybrids โ hybrid construction aimed at balancing detail and body.
- Shielded silver-plated OFC โ stable and low-loss, with a metal shielding layer; a strong value choice and good in electrically noisy setups.
These are tendencies, not guarantees. If you tell us your headphones and what you want more of, we’ll give you a straight recommendation โ including “the cheaper one is fine” where that’s the honest answer.
Can I customise length, plug and connector?
Yes โ that’s the core of what the workshop does. You can specify conductor material, cable length, the source-side plug (2.5 mm, 3.5 mm, 4.4 mm, 4-pin XLR, 6.35 mm, and L-shaped variants) and the device-side connector.
Choose the options on the product page where they are listed. A cable ordered using only those published options remains a standard catalogue item, even if assembled after you order, and is covered by our standard cancellation and 30-day return terms. For a build outside the published options, email us with your requirements and we will quote it. This is a personalised custom build: it cannot be cancelled once production has started, or returned or exchanged unless it is faulty or we built it incorrectly. Please confirm the specification with us before production begins. See the Return & Refund Policy.
Orders & delivery
How long until my cable ships?
Every cable is made by hand, so there’s a build time before there’s a shipping time:
- Standard catalogue items in stock โ 1โ3 business days to process.
- Standard catalogue cables assembled after ordering โ 2โ5 business days.
- Custom builds needing special components โ 5โ10 business days.
Transit is on top of that: roughly 7โ21 business days on free shipping, 3โ12 on standard, 3โ7 on expedited. Full detail is in the Shipping & Delivery Policy.
Do you ship worldwide, and what does it cost?
Yes, we ship worldwide with tracking.
- Free shipping on orders of $50 USD or more.
- Standard shipping at a flat rate shown at checkout for orders below that.
- Expedited shipping where available for your destination.
A few destinations can’t be served by every method. If your country isn’t selectable at checkout, email us and we’ll find out what’s possible.
Will I have to pay customs duties or import tax?
Possibly โ it depends on your country, and it’s outside our control. International shipments may attract customs duty, import tax, VAT or GST, and these are the customer’s responsibility. They’re charged by your government, not included in our prices, and not something we can prepay or refund.
If you’re unsure what your country charges on imported audio accessories, check with your local customs authority before ordering. We can’t under-declare a parcel or mark it as a gift โ that’s illegal and risks your shipment being seized.
How do I track my order?
We email a tracking number when your parcel is dispatched. Track it on the carrier’s site or any third-party tracking service.
Tracking often takes a few days to go live, and international parcels frequently show no movement while between countries. A quiet tracking page in the first week is normal. If it stays silent well beyond the estimate, email us your order number and we’ll open a trace.
Can I cancel or change my order?
Email support@hififorge.com with your order number as soon as possible if you need to cancel or change an order. Cancellation is free within 2 hours of ordering. After that, a 2% processing fee may apply, though we often waive it. A standard catalogue cable ordered using only the options shown on its product page remains covered by these standard cancellation terms, even if assembled after you order. Orders cannot be cancelled once handed to the shipping carrier. A personalised custom build requested outside the published product-page options cannot be cancelled once production has started. Please contact us about any requested change before dispatch; changes are subject to confirmation. See the Return & Refund Policy.
Returns & after-sales
What’s your return policy?
You have 30 days from delivery to request a return or exchange on a standard catalogue item, including a cable assembled after ordering using only the options shown on its product page. Items must meet the condition, original accessories and packaging requirements in our Return & Refund Policy. Trying a cable to check fit and sound is allowed; wear beyond that is not. For change-of-mind returns, the customer pays return postage and original shipping charges are non-refundable. For a wrong item sent by us or a confirmed manufacturing defect, HiFiForge pays return postage and refunds the original shipping fee. A personalised custom build requested outside the published options is not returnable unless faulty or built incorrectly. Contact us before sending a return. Full terms: Return & Refund Policy.
When will I get my refund?
Returned items are inspected on arrival. Once yours passes, we refund to your original payment method โ allow 5โ10 business days for a card refund to show up, sometimes longer depending on your bank.
We refund what you paid us in the original currency. We can’t cover exchange-rate movements or fees charged by your own payment provider.
What warranty do I get?
A one-year limited warranty from the delivery date, covering confirmed manufacturing and material defects, for the original purchaser with proof of purchase.
It excludes accidental damage, liquid damage, unauthorised modification and normal cosmetic wear. Paid repairs are available after the first year. See Warranty & Repair.
My cable doesn’t work โ what should I check first?
Reseat both ends firmly: the plug at your source and the connectors at the earpieces. A connector not fully seated is the most common cause by a wide margin.
If there’s still no sound, or sound on one side only, the cable may not match your headphone’s wiring standard rather than being faulty โ see the connector question at the top of this page. Email us your headphone model and we’ll confirm compatibility.
How do I tell left from right?
- Check the L and R markings first. They’re normally on the connector housings, the Y-split or the sleeving near the earpieces. On detachable IEM cables, match the cable’s L/R to the marks on the earpiece.
- Colour is a secondary clue only. Red usually means right, with blue, green or black for left โ but this varies between brands, so always trust the letters over the colour.
- Still unsure? Send us your brand and model and we’ll confirm the orientation.
About us
Who makes these cables?
HiFiForge is the authorised dealer for GUCraftsman, a workshop that has been building headphone and IEM cables by hand since 2010. We’re not the factory, and we don’t pretend to be โ every cable is cut, braided, soldered and sealed by hand in that workshop, and we handle the storefront, the connector matching and your after-sales support. More on the About Us page.
How do I get in touch?
Email support@hififorge.com. We reply within 1โ2 business days, and messages sent over a weekend or holiday are answered on the next business day. Including your order number and device model makes a one-reply answer far more likely.
Still stuck?
Ask us anything โ compatibility, materials, lead times, a build that isn’t in the catalogue. There’s no such thing as a question too basic.
