Headphone & IEM Connector Compatibility Guide

Choosing a replacement cable starts with one question: what exact connector and wiring standard does your headphone or IEM use? The connector shape is useful, but it is not enough on its own. Two plugs can appear identical and still differ in pinout, polarity, housing depth, locking method or brand-specific wiring.

The safest process is to identify the exact make and model, confirm the connector at the headphone or earpiece, and then match the source-side plug to the output on your amplifier, DAC, dongle or audio player. If any part remains uncertain, send the complete device chain to HiFiForge before ordering. We would rather check the specification first than ask you to solve a compatibility problem after delivery.

The short answer

Use this order:

  1. Record the exact headphone or IEM make and model.
  2. Identify the connector at the earcup or earpiece.
  3. Check for recessed sockets, threads, keyed housings or locking features.
  4. Confirm that the cable pinout is listed for your model family.
  5. Choose the source-side termination only after the device connector is confirmed.
  6. Ask for a compatibility review when the exact model is not named on the product page.

Do not force a plug that does not seat naturally. A near match can damage small IEM sockets or create an unreliable connection even when audio appears briefly.

Why connector shape is not the whole answer

A connector performs both a mechanical and an electrical job. Mechanically, the plug must fit the socket with the correct depth, orientation and retention method. Electrically, the contacts must carry the left and right channels and their returns according to the wiring expected by the device.

Compatibility can fail when:

  • the connector diameter is correct but the pinout is different;
  • a recessed socket requires a longer or narrower housing;
  • a threaded headphone socket needs a matching collar;
  • a two-pin IEM connector uses a different housing or orientation;
  • an MMCX-style connector uses a brand-specific recessed implementation;
  • a four-pin connector is wired for a different model family;
  • the source-side plug does not match the output type on the source device.

That is why “it looks the same” is not a reliable compatibility test.

Common headphone-side connectors

Dual 2.5 mm connectors

Some headphones use one 2.5 mm mono connector at each earcup. This arrangement appears on selected models and older model families, but the shared diameter does not prove shared wiring. A useful example is the 6N copper dual 2.5 mm cable for OPPO PM-1, PM-2 and compatible legacy HIFIMAN models. Confirm the exact model rather than ordering by diameter alone.

Dual 3.5 mm connectors

Dual 3.5 mm earcup connectors are used by several brands, including selected Focal, Sony, HIFIMAN and Meze models. The housings, threads and wiring can vary. For example, the Focal silver and graphene cable and the Sony MDR-Z7, MDR-Z7M2 and MDR-Z1R cable use model-specific compatibility descriptions even though both involve 3.5 mm connectors at the headphones.

Sennheiser HD 800-series connectors

The Sennheiser HD 800, HD 800 S and HD 820 use a dedicated connector style. A cable intended for the HD 600 or HD 650 family is not interchangeable with it. See the HD 800-series silver and graphene cable for an example of a model-specific listing.

Mini-XLR, Hirose, A2DC and other headphone connectors

Other headphones may use mini-XLR, Hirose-style, A2DC or proprietary two-pin systems. Even within a familiar connector family, the number of pins, housing shape and wiring can change. Treat the headphone model as the primary compatibility reference and the connector name as supporting information.

Browse the Headphone Cable category by model, brand and connector, or use the Custom Shop when the required combination is not listed.

Common IEM connectors

0.78 mm 2-pin

The 0.78 mm 2-pin format is widely used, but there are recessed, flush and hooded variations. Polarity and the orientation of the connector housing also matter. The 0.78 mm 2-pin silver and graphene IEM cable is a starting point for the explicitly listed compatible models, not a guarantee for every two-pin IEM.

Standard MMCX

MMCX is a round snap-in connector that can rotate after it is seated. It is used by many IEM brands, but socket depth and housing clearance can differ. The standard MMCX copper and graphene IEM cable lists specific compatible model families.

Brand-specific MMCX variants

Selected Sennheiser and Sony IEMs use recessed or model-specific MMCX implementations. They should not be treated as automatically interchangeable with every standard MMCX cable. For example, the shielded cable for Sennheiser IE200, IE300, IE600 and IE900 is built for the named Sennheiser family.

QDC-style 2-pin

QDC-style connectors commonly use a hooded housing around the two pins. The housing angle, polarity and socket design should be checked against the exact IEM. Do not remove or modify the hood to make an uncertain connector fit.

A2DC, IPX and Pentaconn Ear

A2DC, IPX and Pentaconn Ear are distinct connector systems. They are not alternative names for MMCX or standard 0.78 mm 2-pin. Some are associated with particular brands or product families, so the model name remains essential.

JH Audio-style 4-pin and other proprietary systems

Some IEMs use multi-pin connectors designed for a specific family. The JH Audio-style 4-pin copper cable is listed for compatible Layla, Roxanne, Angie and Rosie models. A four-pin appearance alone does not make it suitable for an unrelated device.

Browse the IEM Cable category or ask HiFiForge to review an unlisted model.

How to identify your connector without guessing

Collect the following information:

  • exact brand and model name;
  • a link to the manufacturer’s specification page, if available;
  • a clear photo of the socket and the original cable connector;
  • whether the socket is flush, recessed, threaded or keyed;
  • the source device and output you intend to use;
  • preferred cable length and source-side plug.

A photo is helpful, but the model name is usually more important. Scale and perspective can make 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm connectors look similar, and a photo cannot confirm an internal pinout.

Connector compatibility checklist

Before checkout, confirm all six items:

  • The exact headphone or IEM model appears in the listing or has been confirmed by HiFiForge.
  • The device-side connector family is correct.
  • Recessed, threaded or hooded details match the device.
  • Left and right orientation is understood.
  • The source-side plug matches an actual output on the source device.
  • Length and intended use are suitable for the listening setup.

If one item remains uncertain, pause the order and use the Custom Shop or email support@hififorge.com.

Connector FAQ

Are all 0.78 mm 2-pin cables interchangeable?

No. The basic pin diameter does not cover recessed sockets, housing style, orientation, polarity or brand-specific implementations. Confirm the exact IEM model.

Are all MMCX cables interchangeable?

No. Standard MMCX is common, but recessed and model-specific versions exist. Housing clearance and socket depth can also affect fit.

Can I identify compatibility from a photo?

A photo helps identify the mechanical connector, but it cannot prove the internal wiring. Send the exact model name as well.

What if my model is not listed?

Submit the model, connector, source device, required plug and preferred length through the Custom Shop. Compatibility is reviewed before quotation. The main Headphone & IEM Cable FAQ also covers materials, production time, shipping, returns and warranty.
